30mm Projectile

Vasco Da Gama

Well-Known Member
This item turned up in junk shop in the Grantham area of Lincolnshire, close enough to the Hispano factory to make you think. At first glance it looks homemade and chrome plated. However, with the location I did not want to walk past and then suffer regret for years! Very glad to be educated on what this may be! Pictured alongside a 30mm DEFA practice projectile for comparison.
Weight: 550g
Length: 108.2mm
Diameter across the base: 29.2mm
Width of driving band: 7.6mm

Many thanks Tony, you are correct about the high weight. My initial thought on picking it up was that it may have been a core for an APDS round. The length and nose profile also do not really look right. Only £5 wasted and still worth the risk at the time!

The base looks like its lead filled.
Before your reject it, I wonder if it is something rare that for some unknown reason someone chose to fill with lead...........
I've collected expt rounds for years and come across some really strange but 100% correct items.
Dave.
