The usual format for a wear Gauge is that it has a section called the "GO" , followed by a further section that is called the "NO GO" .
That means a portion of the gauge should fit into the barrell or breech only up to a certain point (that is the "GO" part) if however the gauge goes in even further (usually indicated by a line) then it shows the component to be worn and therefore a "NO GO" situation where the item is usually remedied or scrapped.
Engineers gauges usually look like a weight lifters dumbell with the only detectable difference being determined by a very small measurement of thousandth's of an inch or equivalent in metric.
