37mm projectile on the base is Z7B thinking it could be american any help would be much appreciated please DSC02467.JPGDSC02469.JPGDSC02470.JPG

I believe it to be an M51 APCBC missing its caps, I base my comment on the fact that the M80 I have & from diagrams is that the crimp groove on an M80 is very wide & deep compared to what you have pictured.

Regards Ozzi.

There doesn't seem to be any provision for the caps of an M51 to crimp on.

Later wartime M80s have a deep crimp groove, 1942-43 have a thin one. I think the deep groove co-incided with the allround crimp that seemed to start in 43. I suspect earlier crimps were weak and projectiles got loose.
Ballistic caps were soldered onto M51 projectiles, without the cap they are virtually identical to the M80. It has been suggested that the first M80s were capless M51s, but I have never seen any solid proof.

Thanks Gspragge,

Surely there is a few unfired M80 AP around to see what is stamped into the drive band, if one is found with narrow crimp groove, I will stand to be corrected!

Regards Ozzi.

I looked at both of my M80s. One was dated 44 and had the large groove. The other one doesn't have a date and also has the large groove. Assuming the cap is just soldered on as Gordon has stated, I'm now leaning towards M51 variation. I just question the lack of any solder on the ogive if it is.

Well, to add another round to the possibles it could be a M59 AP, i have added some scans of that and an M51 and M51 B1
Best regards Weasel.

It's not easy,

Pictures of differents 37mm shots,
-picture 1 : M80 with small crimp groove
-picture 2 : M80 with large crimp groove
-picture 3 : M51 B1 - PA with small crimp groove
-picture 4 : M51 B1 with large crimp groove (and groove for the cap)

So ???
