3in factory

If, as it says, the year is 1940 then the factory is very likely the main assembly plant for 3-in mortar bombs at that time, the South African Railways factory at Bloemfontein.

For munitions made from a number of parts, including a main iron or steel casting (mortar bombs, No.36 grenades, aerial bombs), the components were made elsewhere at different factories and then put together with final machining and corrosion-proofing at the main assembly plant.
