4.5 inch Drill Projectile Info Wanted

Hello,

I have just bought a 4.5 inch drill projectile and was wondering as to the type of 4.5 inch gun that it would have been used with, and what approximate age it could be ? On the side it has stencilled: DRILL 4.5" MKN3/1 RL 5/57. On the top is a plug with: PLUG FIRING NO 11 MK 2N CEC

Any additional info on this projectile would be gratefully received. Thanks.

The clue is in the stamp "RL 5/57", made at Royal Laboratory Woolwich in May 1957.

I think that your projectile is made from either a Practice or unfilled HE round possibly a reject projectile with the band turned flush so the projectile does not engage and jam in the rifling of the weapon.
