4.5in How

2pounder

Been trying to identify a 4.5in How shell, think it might be bursting smoke or chemical but looking in my books I noticed the band style changes, early ones having a narrow hump band and later a wider grooved band. Anyone know when the change took place and was it for all types of shell?

sorry no photo but it has a steel container inside held in by the steel adaptor which has a 2in thread inside, there is a side filling hole with no plug in it and the hump band is unfired. I have a photo copy of various ''methods of filing'' 4.5in How shells but the diagrams have the later grooved band and the container part is integral with the adaptor. chemical and smoke are shown fuzed No.44 in an adaptor No.2. but I think I've seen photos of them fuzed 101 and 106.

Also the methods of filling shows base plates riveted in the shell bases and the one to be identified definitely does not.
