40 mm Bofors Drill, possibly South African

40 mm Bofors Drill. I believe it to be of South African origin due to the KE on the head stamp.

There is a wooden rod used as a spacer with runs the length of the case.

Who is the maker KE Andy and what purpose does the wooden rod serve? It looks like a steel proj solidly crimped into the case.

Not 100% sure on the KE, but I have seen this on most of the 90 mm cases, 20 pounder cases and 40 mm Bofors cases here in South Africa. I think it may be Somchem. They were making most of the larger calibre item.

I think the wooden rod would be there to make sure the projectile does not move into the case from repeated use.

The wooden rod is visible in the photo.
