40mm Bofors recoil

Sounds a strange question to ask. Can anyone tell me how far a Bofors gun barrel recoils back. Seen it on footage but doesn't seem to travel that far, more like a foot.

The British guns had a recoil range of 205mm + or - 20mm. It is quoted as such in the maintenance manual.

Depends on the Mark of gun, I think; post-WW2 versions of the L/60 - and even more so the L/70 (esp. the OTO "Fast Forty") - have a shorter recoil stroke to increase the rate of fire.

I had a look in a manual. it works out about 7.5 inches for normal setting, anything over 8 inches would cause a strain on the working parts. Thanks every one for your help.
