40mm grenade ammunition

Another little gem I found today. I know precious little about modern rifle grenades so would appreciate an accurate identification. Am I correct in assuming this is a buckshot grenade or AP grenade? Is it British or US and what date is it likely to be?

Thanks for your help.

I think it might be a M576 40mm Buckshot round.

The projectile has been inserted in the case the wrong way around. The pointy bit should be inside the case.

That would be why I couldn't see one quite like it! Is it US and what date do you think?

Many thanks

D

It is US and came into service in the mid 60s. I think the M199 case is still in production.

Burney,

Nice Find! Your US M199 Casing / M576E1 Cartridge is probably circa 1970's manufacture. No way determine an exact loading date without a lot number.

Here are some photos of an Earlier US XM576E1 Round (Loaded March 1970) with XM199 E1 Casing dated May 1969 for reference.

Stay safe,

Frank
