40mm Grenade

Hello all i picked up this 40mm grenade recently and found it interesting due to it having a plastic case. Its the first case ive seen like this and wondered if anyone has any info on them. The case has no markings on it at all but the projectile has some very faded markings on the side but i cannot make all of them out. The bottom of the projectile has 40 AC DM 118 stamped on it. Not sure if this projectile is meant for this case but any info would be much appreciated. Cheers Mick.

That is a German DM118 TP made by NICO. The plastic case design was not successfull and was a measure to produce inexpensive practice ammunition. They switched back to aluminum cases later.

The US also use plastic cases for their TP rounds. They just have a different material which looks like some bonded glass fibre.

Korea also produces glass fibre cased TP rounds. Fired a lot during weapon testing with no case problems.

You will also find plastic cases being used with less-lethal baton rounds. The pressures for such loadings are much lower than with the HE stuff.
