40mm S gun projectile base plate?

Please see the attached photo of the base of an S gun 40mm AP shot. I have 2 both of which have the two small holes in the base which I assume was used to screw in a base plate. Is this so and presumably to strengthen the shot? A previous shot I had did not have these two small holes.

The holes are correct Dave, and the base unscrews clockwise.
