can anyone identify the headstamp (L.)

Dunno why, but somehow it strikes me as being of Belgian origin.
Perhaps I've seen that " L. " on Belgian 5,7 Nordenfeldt.

Hi Mick,

Possible that it could be the mark of Lorenz Ammunition & Ordnance Co., who took over the Millwall works of Latimer Clark Muirhead in 1887, and which in 1890 was renamed British Munitions. This looks like an early case, and so would be the right time period. It is said that Lorenz had a contract to make .303, and used the letter L as their mark. They would have made all sorts of other ammo as well, so a good chance they made 3-pdrs.
