Found this on internet about the 5.5-inch HE shells:

Who has a picture of the 80 lb. shell with the black marking behind the driving bands?

Greetings - Antoon

Shell, HE, S/L, 100lb Mk 1DStreamlined shell with single, wide, driving band.
Shell, HE, S/L, 100lb Mk 2DSame as Mk 1D except had double driving bands for better
sealing in the bore.
Shell, HE, S/L, 80lb Mk 1DAlmost the same size as the 100lb shell. Double driving
bands & painted black from the bands to the rear. This
indicated it was an 80lb shell.

There's a very grainy photo in RAOS Pamphlet No. 6, B.L. Ammunition. (my camera battery needs charging, so you'll have to wait)

The black band extends from immediately below the driving band to a point about 1.5" from the base.

TimG,

Do you mean this copy? The marking (I assume black) extend completely to the end of the boattail.

I do not have the pamphlet, so I do not know what the text says.

Greetings - Antoon
