Unusual to me this headstamp... 1238 B, can anyone enlighten me about it,thanks

This headstamp is shown in "British Small Arms Ammunition 1864 - 1938" by P. Labbett (page 223).

Text includes the following...

The Cartridge SA Armour Piercing .5 inch W Mark 1z was covered by design DD/L.1238.B

Some early production prior to the formal approval date bore the drawing number in the headstamp in the place of a mark numeral. Later production bore the code letter "W" and the mark numeral.

The Mark 1.z was approved for air service in July 1927.



I'm certainly not an expert but I have a good library... hope that helps.
