I acquired another 6 pr HE shell a couple of years ago but it's been packed away during a move. Having got it out yesterday, I was comparing it to my other example. It's clearly marked '2 PR XT', the other being a the earlier, smaller shell. I can't make out the mark number on that one.
The odd thing I noticed was the relative position of the crimp groove in the two. The small shell has it in the same position as the various shot whereas the XT has it further down. Period literature states the XT uses a different case, with a thinner neck and designated Mk IM.
I can see in a picture of sectioned rounds from this thread http://www.bocn.co.uk/vbforum/threads/71145-Show-your-6-PR-Rounds-(WW1-amp-WW2)?highlight=57mm that these examples are the same.
I assume the position of the groove is specific to the IM case for the XT shell but I can't say I've noticed either the designation or the lower crimp position in any of my cases. They too are still packed away so I need to confirm that but how common are the IM cases?
