Not much is around these days but I came across this.
It appears that the body fractured when the band was squeezed on.
It would have been rejected and there are no markings.

I can only guess that if it was a Practice unhardened shot this might not have happened.
Maybe as a Hardened shot for service issue the process was flawed and the whole
think became brittle or had cracks in it, though it got through the attachment of the
caps. Kind of what one see's on that "Forged in Fire" programme where the chaps
bugger up the heat treatments and the blades have internal cracks and so on, then fail.
At least nobody took a hammer to the tip, it's otherwise in good condition.
