77 mm shell ID request

Hello, can anyone offer an identification of this shell that my neighbour inherited from her grandmother. The shell is about 290 mm from base to tip. Case diameter is about 77mm but 79mm around the 'rifled' part. The fuse has the printer word SUDI and the number 52 below. Any other markings are not clear.

Would be grateful for any information regarding age, origin and what type of device. The grandmother used it to store premium bonds and dog licence!

The projectile is a fired German model 1896n/A shrapnel shell, the bulging of the body is common with this long thin walled shell. It should be fitted with a fuze adapter and an aluminum time fuze model Dopp Z96n/A. Your fuze is the Point Detonating type used with HE shell, not proper for this projectile but a rare fuze and in very good shape.

Hello Keith, welcome to the forum.

I am no expert but I agree that it's a WW1 era 77mm shrapnel shell. The 77mm was the standard German shrapnel shell in WW1. Frizzen indicates that it's a model 1896, another model was introduced in 1916.

Thanks to you all for the information on the shell. I had searched the internet for a picture of one the same and it had not occured that the fuse may not have matched the shell! There must be a story about where the mix-and-match shell came from and family members are being asked!
