What i have found out that the BLACK letters Nb are not so visual and in the heat of fighting you can easy fire them and think they are HE rounds.
Because of the same color and battle stress.

So to make it easy for the gun crews the letters are made white so you make lesser errors.

That explains a bit, but were they all black before a certain date or made some factories them with white Nb and some with black Nb?
