Strange story..... if that would happen in a weapon free society like the Netherlands where a weapon in public is something very unusual I would understand, but in a country like the USA where carrying a firearm is as normal as breathing....

But it's only normal for the bad guys. You have to understand that this happened in the state of California, the toughest state in the nation on gun laws. Most of us gun owners who live here consider this to basically be a communist state when it come to our gun rights these days. Us good people cannot carry our guns in public in California anymore, the Old West is long dead.
