A Hotchkiss Case

What is the rim diameter? If you want a positive ID you need to give dimensions that are more precise.
 
Basic Hotchkiss "made-up" case, probably from the late-1800s. Probably US 12pdr. Used a lot for naval ordnance.
This Patent probably applies to the steel case you were asking about as well.

There was also a US Navy breech loading 12pdr Landing Gun around this time. It used a separate case, but I have no dimensions for the case.
