a unknown wooden 1939 ammo box...

I'm not writting a lot because of a bad english... sorry.

But can anybody help me to identify this wooden ammo box?

What I already know:
- It's british (the red "6" with "WD")
- it's from ww2 (1939 on a side under "55 W")
- that all!

What was his use? Any information is welcome.
