We had an old Navy guy installing a new lyophiliser at work, who was stationed at Coronado, and he told me an old story. He said that during IIWW German POWs were constructing buildings on Coronado. They hoped that either Japanese or Germans would bomb San Diego. So they shaped the buildings into symbols easily recognizable from high altitude. So they don't die in the bombing raids.
