Anyone ever see a M8 smoke grenade with HCE filler? This was a new one for me that I found in OP 1511.

Anyone with pictures?

Joe

Well, I've got this one. Not sure about the HC-E- filler part. Just says HC.

HCE and HC smoke are the same. The chemical name is hexachloroethan e. It is most often abbreviated as HC, but sometimes they use HCE to capture the "ethane" portion of the name. HC smoke is toxic in large quantities. Functioning smoke grenades by the general public is never recommened, but in this cacse it can be a safety issue beyond the toxic nature of the HC filler. If the HC smoke mixture becomes wet and then dries out again, there is a possibility of a detonation when the grenade functions. Since there is no delay in the grenade fuze, that could result in severe injury.

If you've ever inerted one, they are pretty nasty without burning as well. CS is easier and I suspect safer.

There is a difference between the HC and HCE. HCE is Carbon Tetrachloride with Zinc, not the same chemical comp as HC, according to the OP. And it must have not lasted long in the inventory, no one has even heard of one let alone seen one. According to the OP it was marked HCE instead of HC.

jvollenberg do you still need another picture of one at different angles?

No, but thanks ... we have plenty of pictures of the HC version. I was looking for pic of one with the HCE markings on it.
