I think I can help you. Your bizarre thing is a french incendiary bomb (napalm) initiator called STAE 450H.
In annex you shall find (sorry for quality) a technical data.
You can find doc in US TM B-7-3-6

Many thanks for the explanation and diagram. I have to admit it was labelled for 'Napalm bomb' when I got it years ago but I thought the label was wrong as I couldn't find any info on it.

Doctor, maybe the French forces dropped washing machines on their enemy to get a clean kill and save mopping them up (sorry!).
