Cutaway model of a Russian AO-2 cluster bomb from the Second World War. This cluster bomb was made from the body of a 45mm UO-243 high-explosive shell from the 45 mm M1937 anti-tank gun (see pict. 4). A tail is attached to the underside of the shell body, consisting of four 90-degree sheet metal sections secured to the underside of the body by means of a double spot weld. No driving band has been placed on the projectile body. An adapter ring is fitted to the top of the shell body to allow for the AM-A impact fuze.
A charge of Tetryl is placed in the wider part of the projectile body, the narrow part of the charge consists of Trolyl.
The AM-A fuse is an impact fuze with an impeller safety screwed onto the top. When the bomb enters the airflow, the impeller starts to rotate, is unscrewed, and falls away. A firing pin is placed inside the fuse with a 'pinhead' that holds the firing pin in the rear position. Upon impact, the hollow nose of the fuse fills with earth, after which the pinhead is pressed inward and the firing pin is pushed into the detonator (gray), whereupon it detonates and the Tetryl charge is ignited.
Length complete bomb: 405 mm
Length bomb body (with adapter): 212 mm
Body diameter: 45 mm
Tail diameter: 62 mm
I have no info in which clusterbomb or dispenser this bomb was used, so any info on that is welcome.
