Apax container

This small aluminium container in the attached images was in a trunk together with some uniform, medals and a Trench Knife from the First World War.

It is a small aluminium container with a screw top. The aluminium container is in a outer wooden container. It contains what look like fine steel wires about 100mm long.

The lid is marked APAX. It looks to be French or possibly Belgian. The outer wooden container is about 30mm dia x 150mm long.

Can anyone identify it? Is it military item?

Thanks,

Will.
