It is a pretty cool salt shaker, but if you've been wanting one of these rare grenades for your collection, it's also a pretty upsetting salt shaker.

I wanted to share it here in case anyone was interested in it, but also because I'm curious about other people's opinions about it. I can see that it might be useful for parts, if you need them, but do some think it would be better to keep it as a salt shaker? What do people think about things like this being done to uncommon or rare items? Is it best to leave them as-is? (I wondered the same thing a while back when I saw a lamp made with the frag body of a British no. 19 grenade.)

I have a set of salt and pepper shakers made from Australian No. 69's. For the rest, for me anyway, if its a well done piece, I tend to leave them alone. If its poorly done and has some parts i can use, I will take them apart. Sometimes I can remove a needed part without hurting the "trench art" too much, then I have the best of both. I have a small collection of things that have been made from grenades, lamps seem the most common.

Rob, I certainly would never turn a perfectly good No.69 to a salt shaker. But Ive got several 'trench art' type grenades, cigarette lighters & stuff. Thanks for the heads up. Maybe I'll add one to that part of the collection. Thanks again, Rob!

I think your approach to this makes a lot of sense. Thanks for you reply and for sharing your s+p shakers. Those are nice looking pieces. With the three I've now seen, I think I've seen about as many of these made into shakers as I've seen unmodified ones!

I agree that I wouldn't modify one of these myself either. (Even though they clearly make good salt shakers!) Good luck on the auction!

Those are very nice, thanks for sharing! The turtle grenade is especially interesting. I think this is the first time I've seen something done with one of those.
