Automatic gun pencil sharpener - based on something real?

I remember having one of these when I was about 10 years old (no idea what happened to it). I saw them on sale again recently, which made me wonder if this is modeled on a real gun. It may well just be something that was imagined by whoever designed the mould. It looks fairly detailed, which makes me think they may have been working from some sort of photo or drawing.

Any thoughts? Thanks for any info.

No clue whether it replicates anything, but I did acquire the same example at the RN museum gift shop a few years back.
