Cutaway model of a Belgian PRB –M35anti-personnel blast mine. PRB is the abbreviation for Pouderies Runies de Belgique, an ammunition factory that went bankrupt in1993.
The mine is fully made of PVC, except for the spring steel firing pins, and the aluminum firing cap housing. This makes the mine difficult to find with a metal detector.
The firing pin exists of two thin wire springs, wound like the spring of a clothespin (or peg), except one end is bend inward and sharpened, forming two facing firing pins, both moving inward like a kind of pincer. The firing pins are kept in outward -and tensioned- position by two projections on a -white PVC- plunger that is connected to the pressure button (black). If the pressure button on top of the fuze is pushed downward, the connected plunger moves downward and releases the firing pins which hit the firing cap (red) from two sides at the same moment, igniting the firing cap. This ignites the booster charge(white/grey), which ignites the main charge. In upper position, the plunger also locks off the firing cap from the firing pins, keeping the mine safe when no pressure is applied.
The fuze is marked with the text : Mine fuze M5 Bg A1 – PRB
A practice mine (blue), and a wooden dummy mine are also available.
Diameter of the mine : 67,5 mm (lower rim), body : 63,5mm.
Height of the mine : 56mm.
Height of mine body : 37,5mm.
Weight of the mine : 15 grams.
Weight of the explosive charge : 100 grams mixof TNT and potassium nitrate.
Color : olive drab.
The mine is used by the following countries:
Jordan, Angola, Chad, Equador, Eritrea, Lebanon,Peru, Somalia, Sudan, Uganda and Western Sahara.
