Birmingham in August... what to do?

I can't speak directly about the Birmingham area, but I know you will have no problem enjoying your stay. I spent last August in Wootten Bassett(south central UK). The weather was perfect; 70s, a little rain every once in a while. Take a light jacket. No kidding. Gets chilly when the sun goes down.
Here's a very good place, even if aircraft aren't your thing.

Lots of missiles and air-dropped ordnance. And tanks. And helicopters.
30 minutes east of B'ham.
The EXPLOSION Museum( http://www.explosion.org.uk/visitor-info/how-to-find-us.html is all the way south, in the Portsmouth area. About 3 hour drive +/-. Can't go wrong there.

Another day trip. Another 3+ hour drive.
Plan on being overwhelmed. By the whole country. First "difference", to me, was pork&beans and tomatoes with bacon and eggs in the morning. Got to likin' it. You're on your own with the blood pudding thing. Very few rest stops on the motorway. Nothing like you're used to. Luckily, you can understand almost everybody. If you listen close.
A superb place to see exceptional things. Lucky you. Can't wait 'til I get back over there.

47 mm gun
There is a Museum about 3/4 mile from the Railway station near the "Bull ring" shopping centre that has a really nice 47 mm gun on display which is bare metal and in mint condition, it was made in Birmingham hence the display.

A great place to visit is the Royal Staffordshire Regimental Museum which is just to the north of birmingham near Litchfield http://x.staffordshireregimentmuseum.com/museum.php
It has lots of excellent displays and outside is a reproduction of a 1ww trench system that you can wander up and down.
