Box magazine of unknown origin (ww1 related).

Found this box magazine a couple of weeks ago near Varennes in France. When I cleaned it up a bit I noticed to my surprise that the magazine still contains 5 rounds. Due to the damage I can not remove them but the headstamp shows partly the code R-P and N. Unfortunately I have not been able to the trace origin of this magazine. Suggestions welcome.

I don't know what rifle the magazine belongs to, but it is certainly modern, sind the headstamp "R-P" for Remington Peters was not introduced until at least after WW2 and probably much later. I think some hunter has simply lost the spare magazine for his rifle.

Thanks Tony. I suspected it wasn't a military rifle with the 5 round box magazine, but I found it in a ploughed field amongst some Citron Foug handgrenades and a couple of 58mm French mortars remains and with the
type of surface rust it made me think it was also ww1 related. Will there be a date on these cartridges? If so, I will try to free one from the dent magazine.

Hello Jan,

From your photos, your item appears similar to a Remington (Models Six, 7600, 760 & 76) Series Commercial Rifle Magazine.

Stay safe,
