Any one reconise these markings seen stamped on No2 pressure switches and also stamped on Brtish training S-mines. The lettering in the oval is apoxamate as its a bit obsure. The E is a bit more rounded.

MD1 is Ministry of Defence 1, alias 'Winston Churchill's Toyshop', an independent armament design, development and production house until 1944 when it was taken over by the Armament Design Department of the Ministry of Supply. They created Blackers Bombard, the sticky grenade (No 74), PIAT, Limpet, Clam, Switches 1, 2, 3, 9, 11, 12, 13 etc etc.

E.S.S. Ltd (Trading name, pre-war made signs) was one of their contractors. They had factories in Bristol and Hendon.
