If think a more likely candidate for AVON would be

Avon Malleable Foundry Ltd.,
Chapel Street, St. Phillips Marsh, Bristol.

Whose war effort, amongst other products, was castings in gunmetal and phosphor bronze.

They also had a background in marine fittings.

You could be correct.Interesting.I think the seal is made of rubber.I do not now when Avon (the rubber compagnie that is)started to produce there products.I will look in to it.Thanks for the name of the foundry.

Avon whas founded in 1885 in Limpley Stoke.They made rubbers for industrial use and for defence.So they are still in the running for "SP.V.M.18 2 FOR I I I I * & HIV MINES AVON 1918 .
