Interesting stuff. I have heard that the longest kill in Afganistan was by a Brit sniper and that that was over a mile. True?

As I age, my interest in bigger/louder rounds has diminished appreciably so

.45 -------> 9mm
.303 ------> .223 and (gasp) .17

What sor of maximum ranges could one experience given proper equipment, practice and so on?

my 223 is a Ruger 1b, 9mm is a Beretta 92fs

I don't think that it's possible to give an answer to that question. The maximum ballistic range will be several times as far as you could shoot with any expectation of hitting anything. And it does, of course, depend on what you're aiming at, wind strength etc.
