EODGUY,

I had a subumition that was approximately the size of a softball maybe even a tad less in circumferences of a softball.

Anyhow, The insides of both had heavy and deep serrations to form what looked like a some gerographic triangular pattern inside the two haves. Other than that the both sides line up and fit perfectly. The size I remember if I can remember (Old age), was about of softball size and were not painted any color they were just bare all steel or aluminum? It may have also been a tad smaller to.

What do you think I had as a submission?

Now I can kick my self in the rear for not keeping them and remembering who I sold them to.

I don't really have any idea what it might have been based on the description. The BLU series of round submunitions like Dano's just about all had an aluminum body with embedded steel balls, not a frag pattern. The BLU-24 series, or Jungle Bomb, was cast iron and if I remember right had internal serrations. It is quite often found without the plastic fins attached. The BLU-24 B/B version had a body with external longitudinal grooves and the submunition body was covered with a thin layer of plastic. These were about 2.75 inches in diameter. The BLU-61 had a coined steel liner and a plastic outer body. It was about 3.3 inches in diameter. Although possibly close, neither of these match your description. I would say US-Subs would be a better peson to direct the question to.

Us-Subs,

Can you assist with the one item I use to have that was two half spheres that look like they were in very first stage of development. No paint but bare metal. I forgot one thing and that was that each half sphere had a lip of about 1 1/4 of an inch that maybe was there for something else other than maybe using some sort of glue? I am not sure if it was even meant to be there in the first place.

Are you willing to give me some assistance? Really would appreciate it.

Mark

Sounds like the M139, submunition, designed to be filled with GB nerve agent. Two hemispheres around a central HE burster and fuze. Delivered from several large rocket systems in the 1950s-60s like the Honest John, Little John, Sergeant, Corporal.

The M139 was never painted, but had a locking ring that secured the two sides, the ring had the color code and identification.

I'm away from my photo files, but here are a couple of shots from the net.

I thought of the M139 also, but the description of the heavy internal serrations doesn't fit. After that it was still a big question mark for me. Is there a version with serrations? That dosen't make sense because you wouldn't want enough HE in the M139 to produce fragments because of the chemical payload.
