Couple Pre-WW1 and WW1 German Munitions Boxes - Plus ?'s

Hello Folks -

Maybe a bit OT prom the projectile category, but not sure where this fits. I was fortunate to pick up two Early German Munitions Boxes. I'll post separately so I don't get them mixed up. Tomorrow for the next.

First is an 1890's, Platzpatronen 88mm. Storage-Transport Box. The munitions were made in Strassburg in the 1890's and the outside is stenciled "HAMURG - GERMANY" on the front and back. My understanding was that these are 'blanks' or possibly 'signal' cartridges? But my real question is what would they have been used in at that time. I know that Hamburg had a large Kaiserliche Marine (Naval) Base and I believe the U-Boats and other Naval Ships used the 88 early on.

However, that is just from the seat of my pants and I can't find much info on early German 88mm artillery or guns.

Well, thanks for looking. Appreciate any comments or thought on this one. The second box is for the Granatenwerfer Gr. 16.

Best regards!
- Mike

the box contained 7.92x57 blanks (model 1888) No relation to artillery, but really nice label! I think the words "Hamburg Germany" are from some civilian use of this box...

Thank you Alpini -

I wondered about that possibility myself, as it fits the date. However, how would the Gewehr 88 cartidge relate to the 10 - 90mm. recesses with additional 30mm. recesses in the middle of each? Were7.92 blanks issued in coils? Some kind of safety addition?

Possibly it was reused? That would be very cool if it served more than one purpose. Added a pic of an Austrian M15 75mm. shell in one of the recesses. A bit small of course, but just to illustrate the recess.

Best regards!
