Hello all,
Can anyone enlighten me as to what the 5 1/2 C marking means on this old case? I'm assuming it is a cut down 3pdr case (currently only measures 15cm - just under 6 inches long).
Many thanks,
Ben.

Ben, it's actually a quite scarce torpedo launching cartridge, officially "Cartridge, Impulse, Torpedo, 5.1/2oz." of WWI vintage. There were other lengths, with different 'charges', made for different sizes of torpedoes: 10oz, 9oz, 8.1/2oz, 7.1/2oz, 6oz, 5.1/2oz and 4.1/2oz. Regards, Depotman.

Having re-read that document in the 1915 Treatise - the illustration is indicated as full size and the case length measures circa 7 3/4 inches. In the description it says that they "are all similar in construction, differing only in the weight of the propellant and minor details". So it appears that it has been cut down further at some point which is a shame :-(
