Hum, I don't know if we are speaking of the same kind of belts, but I have use explosive demolition belts to cut trees on the road to make what we called an "abattis".
I don't know the translation in English for this engineer term.

Evidently, in the movie you can see the effect on ONE tree. Operationally, the belts are used on the trees, left and right of the road, trees must fallen on the road ( correct positioning of the belts) and the quantity of explosive used must be just enough to let fall the tree on the road but not cut it completely off his stump. The wanted result is to obtain a "road block".
