Dyakonov rifle grenade, Russia, WW1 and WW2

Cutaway model of a Russian WW1 and WW2 Dyakanov rifle grenade. This rifle grenade was launched by means of a launching cup placed on the front of the barrel of a Mosin Nagant rifle. An interesting feature is that this rifle grenade is of the bullet through type, so no change to a propulsion cartridge is needed before firing.
The Dyakanov rifle grenade was designed in 1916 by captain Mikhail Dyakonov, however due to the 1920’s civil war it was not taken into service until 1928 in a slightly improved version. Two high explosive versions are available, one with a smooth grenade body, and one with a prefragmentated body, as depicted in this posting. The Dyakanov rifle grenade was declared obsolete in 1942.

The Dyakanov rifle grenade consists of a ogive shaped fragmentation body with a base plate soldered to the base which houses a brass detonator envelope. The base plate has three notches at 120 degrees each whom fit the spiraling groove in the launching cup and give the grenade rotation for stabilization during flight.
A pipe with a 7,82 mm hole is placed in the center of the grenade body, in top and bottom the pipe is threaded externally. A cone shaped lock up nut is screwed on top of the pipe, and at the base a pyrotechnic time fuze is placed consisting of three flanges, locked up by a ring nut at the base. The upper flange houses the screwed in flame sensitive detonator, the middle flange houses the pyrotechnic delay -varying from three to twelve seconds-, the lower flange houses the hole which ignites the pyrotechnic delay and the sheet metal ring that expands upon firing to form a gas tight seal. To increase the delay time, the middle flange is rotated to the desired number of seconds.
An extra 3 grams donut shaped powder charge can be added to the base of the grenade, increasing the max. range to 900 meters. In this cutaway model however, the incremental charge is not present
Six types of grenades were available for the Dyakanov rifle grenade system: The High explosive grenade, the signal smoke colour (day), the night time signal smoke colour, the flare grenade, the practice grenade, and the VKG 40 shaped charge grenade.

Weight : 360 grams (0,8 Lb)
Calibre : 40,8 mm
Length : 117 mm
Explosive charge : 50 grams TNT
Max. range grenade : 300 mtrs without added charge, 900 mtrs with added charge.
Max. lethal radius : 50 mtrs.
Vo : 110 Mtr/sec.

Regards, DJH
