Early no 36 with strange surface finish

Hi all, I bought this grenade a while ago on an auction site along with a nice centre cast from the same maker. There are a few odd features of this grenade, #1 being the date on copper washed base plug ,which whilst incomplete appears to be 4/17 ( which matches one displayed on Dave Sampsons website) early or what ?. #2 No makers mark on body ! #3 if you look closely at images, you will see that the surface finish appears more like machine finished steel than usual rough cast iron finish......your opinions and/or knowledge will be gratefully received... thanks
