Epping forest uxb

Digging through my past Records i thought i would put this on
The Bomber that crashed at wakearms Epping forest was carrying
a number of SC500s.

This was taken in 1979 once EOD had imunised the cargo.

In those days i watched them Burning of the bombs fillings.
The bombs now live in the Imperial war museum,
and the crew of this plane were buried at Chingford Mount
Cemetery E4 and then later Exhumed and moved to Cannock chase
German military cemetery.

Have those fuze pockets been drilled out?

It looks like they cut the fuse pockets out very neatly and dismantled
the pockets.

On a close up of the fuse the officers holding i can only see one
charge pin on the fuse head 17s poss?

The fuze pocket was trepanned out , it looks as though the officer is holding the fuze, which is still in its pocket

Were these bombs still on the aircraft, or found later? Only reason I ask is that RAF normally deal with bombs on crashed aircraft and those guys are RE.

I agree with fuzeman, though. Trepanned fuze pocket - and the fuze is in the BDO's hand.

The bombs were found within the wreckage of the plane in a bit of a scattered pattern.

The fuses were Elaz 25 and in such good condition that one of the bombs
was manually defused as per wartime BD.

The booster charges were removed in perfect condition with writing
clearley readable.

Mind you this was in 1979 and had only been buried for 40 odd years
which must have made a lot of diference from ordnance found today.
