Experimental guided 105mm recoiless rifle projectile

The following link is for a research paper (1957) describing a recoilless rifle weapon system using terminally guided experimental projectiles. This technology was still in the early stages of development at the time. The system described used a M40 106mm Recoilless Rifle, infrared target illuminator and projectiles modified to hold an infrared detector, guidance and control elements. Projectile picture and diagrams are included.

This is a big file so it takes some time to download

Brian, thank you for posting that link. Yes it was rather big.

It was interesting to read "Infrared command systems are discarded due to the need for two trackers, one being required for the target, the other for the projectile." Yet over here at about the same time Orange William adopted that very system, although it would be travelling a little slower.

So what happened to POLCAT? I wasn't able to find any further online information.

I wonder were there any other IR links tried in any other weapons systems of the time?
