Hi I think you have a 40 pdr Armstrong projectile......if you can post photos from a side view this will help in indentifying....Regards

yes it certainly is heavy , two were dug up and deposited in the scrap bin , where i rescued them from for a number of reasons , thanks again for your help

Nice shell.
I'm sure you're aware of this, just be careful how you handle lead, its not good for you, wear gloves.
Dave.

Whilst lead is now considered unsafe, from Roman to at least late Victorian times it was used for water pipes, many houses still have it. Tonnes are still used for roofing applications where the water run off ends up in underground water levels where it is ultimately pumped to our homes. So its not really dangerous, you might generate birth defects and loose brain power if you eat it ie wash your hands after handling, but anyone who eats game will eat some lead, it comes out next day. There is a movement to ban lead in ammunition as a way of reducing lead in the environment, it will also stop a lot of people being able to afford ammunition and the alternative materials probably have just as bad an effect on the world in other ways, ie their mining and refinging uses energy produced from.... fossil fuel?

Interestingly enough there is actually an old lead mine not to far from where I live, was used in WW1 and somewhat in WW2. Now it is almost like a small wasteland of toxic trailings. Interesting stuff, and unless you plan on eating the thing its safe enough. Just wash your hands after!

Hello,

Could you post a picture of the top please to check it's safe ? (any fuze hole ?)
