Finish on US M48A2 PD fuze

A bit of an obscure one, but I’d like to know for restoration purposes: what was the original finish on the lower steel section of the WWII US M48A2 PD fuze? Was it phosphate, left bare or some sort of grey paint?

Thanks.

I have several. Some type of plating. One looks like chrome. Three look like cadmium. That is for the sheet metal cone. The bottom steel part appears as plain metal on each one.
