First Stick Gren produced

jeeeensy

Well-Known Member
This is the very early and rare parachute stick gren, usually see these now n then without the handle and a restored head, it needs a cloth skirt to complete so if anyone knows the pattern for this i would very gratefull.

Regards
Nick

parachute grenade

Righto, you are Jeensey, this was German first shot at the stick, came out very early in 1915. Interestingly enough, the "skirt" is actually a parachute designed to open high in the air and insure the grenade landed on percussion igniter. Pic wise this is all i've got, as i've never seen a pic or drawing with parachute open. Hope this helps..Dano

one rare critter

I guess Jeeeensy, you realize just how rare this is. It was one of Germany's few true failures in the grenade department. Too damn much had to happen at timed intervals (ya think!) for a successful landing. Probably saw less than a month of service until the m1915 time fuzed stick appeared on the scene. wonderful snag pal..Dano

Hello

It seems me (not sure) this is from the AASEN type C danish grenade.

1915 parachute grenade

The body, which is painted black, consists of a tin cylinder of explosive with hemispherical head of larger diameter containing shrapnel bullets. A buffer cylinder passes through the body and projects, so as to produce the explosion slightly above ground. The base of the body is closed by a wooden plug at the handle. A parachute safety arrangment is attached to the head of the handle in order to prevent fragments flying to the rear on explosion, and also to cause the grenade to fall on its head. A cord seven meters long which normally is coiled up inside the handle, is attached to a long needle passing down the percussion pellet. A safety hook retains a ring attached to the end of the percussion pellet and the needle passes through a hole in this hook. After the first seven meters of the flight, the jerk on the cord pulls out the needle and the safety hook is thus free to fall out sideways and so allow the percussion pellet to move forward on concussion.

It might be noticed that Aasen was a Norwegian who sold his designs to several countries which produced the grenades with small differences.
