Hello ,

can anyone give me the proper name of this french 47 mm ?
And also which shell belongs to it ? Can somebody post a pic please ?
Cal : 47 mm , hight 15, 3 cm , fuse marked 22-31 Mle 97 .

Hello,

It's a black powder 47mm 1888 M modified to be fitted with a time and percussion fuze 22/31mm Mle 1897. (in French : obus de 47mm ordinaire modle 1888 M modifi)
First the 47mm 1888 M (Navy) was fuzed with a "Desmarest 1877". First modification to receive a 18/28mm T&P fuze (very short life) and then with the army fuze 22/31mm 1897.
This old shell was used on WW1 battlefield.
Case 1885 : 377mm
Case 1902 : 380mm

I think you will want or prefer the 1885 case which is the standard Navy gun case, maybe easier to find also. The 1902 case I believe is a Tube Cannon case, that is for subcalibre practice firing.

I just collected one of them, with that curiously-shaped HE shell which looks like a modern HEAT shell for a tank gun.

Yep, I was rather pleased with it. Coincidentally I also picked up a French 37x149R tank gun round with a similar HE shell, the round being nicely sectioned. I must put some photos up when I can find the time for a piccy session...
