Unusual bit of kit. This is marked "GAUGE FOR M.S.K BOMB TYPE Q, SPHERICAL. DESIGN T W 222 T&S 10/15"
It dates from the early part of the War when much work was done on chemical natures. The Type Q Spherical was made of cast iron, filled with MSK a rather persistent agent, and the grenade was primarily designed for use in catapults and spring guns and the like. It was discontinued, but reappeared in late 1916 as Grenade, No 28 Mk 1. Spring guns were withdrawn from service in March 1917, probably much to the relief of those who had to operated them.
