I found this at a car boot sale yesterday. Although I don't usually collect German, and it has a nasty crack in the case, I still thought it was worth the 6 I paid for it.
It was made by Patronenfabrik Karlsruhe in 1899. It appears that the case was shortened from 93mm to 88mm as part of conversion to an Exzerzier (drill) case. The metal cap fits into the top with a twist-lock mechanism which fits into rails riveted to the inside of the case. This currently does not work as one of the rails is slightly damaged. However, I will rectify this.
The case has been re-stamped Ex. V. What does the "V." stand for?
The cap has also split around the edges of the lip, but is still mostly intact. What does "AUF." on the cap stand for?
What I also wondered is were any of these Howitzers supplied to the South African Boers? I have seen other German made cases with similar dates that were said to be used in the Boer war? This case could have possibly have been bought back by a British soldier as a souvenir. Could this also have possibly been used for training gunners during WW1?
Thanks for any info.
