I hope that this short thread will help resolve issues on designation of German bombs
SC 1,000 KG Hermann Dia 660 mm body length 1,905 mm overall 2,781 mm
SD 1,000 KG Esau Dia 502 mm Body length 1,486 mm overall 2,172 mm
SD 1400 KG Fritz Dia 559 mm body length 1,922 mm overall 2,815mm
SC1800 KG Satan Dia 660 mm body length 2,718 mm overall 3,738 mm
SC2500 KG Max Dia 2 ft 6 inches Overall 9 Ft 2 inches
Its interesting to note that the Bomb disposal officers were not informed of the 2,500 kg Max, possibly because none were found unexploded, only 1 sqdn were allowed to drop these weapons,

Hi Austin SD1400 have just corrected my article thanks
The source was Arthur hogbens Designed to kill.
The PC1400 was an armour piecing bomb that had a more pointed nose, there was no british designation for this 1400 kg bomb to my knowlege.

Hi allan
The air ministry and If and DBD knew about it but because there was no known examples it was decided not to pass on any information,
this i got from several wartime BD officers, who were totally unaware of the MAX
We in Harrow got one as did Hendon , but it was put out like the V1 as a probable gas main gone up

just remember waff these early documents and modern ones can be flawed and should be used as guidelines only

John hannaford was a wartime bomb disposal officer who helped train the Americans on bomb disposal over here in London, was told nothing of the Max until an article he was reading mentioned a MAX, this was sent to me by John ,in 2003 i hope you will all appreciate it as much as myself.

Do you reckon the Germans knew about PADDOCK and were trying to get it in February 1941? [If they did, I wonder how, as it was strictly Top Secret?] As it was, they got several streets of terraced houses - hardly worth such a monstrous piece of ordnance? That said, didn't De Havilland have a factory around there somewhere - perhaps they were after that?

I think it was the de haviland plant they were after , but why Harrow got one i hate to think it may have been Hamilton paint brush factory , or white friars glass a possibility, I dont think it was Kodak, although they had a close one with a parachute mine that floated and brushed past their chimney and failed to explode
