German M24 end cap sizes

Do wartime M24 end caps come in various sizes? I was looking to replace a couple of damaged/corroded end caps and both examples that I have found so far are too small to fit. These end caps are clearly original but will not fit onto the handles. This makes me wonder if there was some size variation between various manufacturers? Any ideas?
 
Hi yes there are 2 possibly 3 variant's that I know of.
this is why when they are up for sale, you must ask the seller to show them fitted together as most are a mismatch.

That's unfortunate. This is going to make finding a couple of suitable replacement caps an even greater challenge. Thanks Nick!
